Agua Dulce Technologies, LLC, is a privately funded and owned corporation based in Littleton, Colorado. The company is building a wastewater purification plant in Colorado to demonstrate the Membrane Pervaporation Technology at a scale of 1,000 barrels per week of feedstock from the Oil and Gas Fields in the United States. The technology was developed by US Metals Refining Group (USMRG), Inc. and licensed to Agua Dulce Technologies, LLC. Early pilot test work results generated by USMRG were reviewed by QP Engineers from Samuel Engineering, Inc. of Denver, Colorado.
In this technology, multiple porous ceramic tubes with very high surface areas are used to separate fresh water from mineral salts under conditions of moderately low temperature and pressure. Energy required for this process is provided by natural gas from the large oil shale resources while low pressure in the Membrane Modules is maintained by low cost innovative devices. In addition, Agua Dulce Technologies will install a robust Pre-treatment Technology to recover any residual crude oil from wastewater and remove all solid debris from feedstock prior to water purification process.
Agua Dulce Technologies engaged Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PEA) from Alabama and Utah to complete the basic engineering design, pipe sizing and instrumentation diagrams for both Pretreatment and Pervaporation Processes. Upon successful delivery of the front-end engineering design data and reports, Agua Dulce Technologies contracted Tetra Tech, Inc. in Utah to complete the feasibility and detailed engineering design of the plant.
Speaking on behalf of partners and board members, Dr Henry Kasaini, President and CEO of Agua Dulce Technologies, said “We are thrilled to acquire the exclusive license to wastewater treatment technology from USMRG and are looking forward to creating strategic partnerships with the Oil and Gas operators in the United States and other wastewater disposal companies to debottleneck the fracking process by recycling fresh water, minimizing or eliminating wastewater injection into the subsurface rock formations and to significantly reduce flaring. This technology could not have come at a better time than this. Although this technology has great potential to concentrate minerals from brine solutions and generate thousands of gallons of fresh water per day, our company will not focus on recovery of minerals from Brine but rather collaborate with Oil and Gas companies to minimize environmental damage and accelerate oil and gas production.” Dr Kasaini added, “We have tested the performance of this technology on brines from the mining industry including effluents from uranium mines . The results obtained so far are impressive. For each barrel of wastewater treated , 85-90%wt fresh water was recovered. Each barrel of wastewater processed contained up to 10%wt residual crude oil which was successfully recovered. With regards to mineral salts, we were able to upgrade metals to the final mineral-rich discharge solution by factors of 10-40.”
Agua Dulce Technologies has secured a 16,500 square feet facility in Denver to host the wastewater purification plant and will receive feedstock from various Wastewater Disposal Facilities (WDFs) . The company is currently collaborating with Pervatech, BV, in The Netherlands to fabricate ceramic membrane tubes suitable for pervaporation techniques established by USMRG Inc. At the same time, USMRG has filed a Patent for the Membrane Pervaporation Technology which utilizes innovative vacuum generating devices and unique ceramic tube configurations. Dr Henry Kasaini was mentioned as the inventor in this patent.
